Oprah and Lay-offs

\

Oprah speaks to those laid-off

What you should do

Oprah had a show talking about those who were laid-off. The show was very informative and showcased what one should do if you were to sadly be in this situation. It seems as if all the information was very basic but all rationale usually goes out of the window when something life changing occurs. Direct Article-What to Do When You Get Laid Off on Oprah’s Website

Unemployment Most people do not realize that the taxes you pay go toward unemployment. So if you are laid-off please apply for it. Do not be ashamed of the situation. You were laid-off and not fired/terminated so you will eligible. Contact your state’s compensation office for more info. Google it or get the old fashioned yellow pages to get their number.

Protect Your Credit This is very important! Your credit score falls and you get behind in your credit card bills, etc and everything seems to take a downward spiral. Make sure to call all your credit card companies or accounts that you have to let them know what happened. Some have hardship programs to help you through tough times. Do not let your credit score drop!

Talk to your family Let your children know what is going on in the family. Covering it up may lead them to believe that your family can live the same life as before. This will not be true after a lay-off. Budgets may have to be made and definitely cuts on expenditures that can be done without.

Look for another job Looking for another job is very important. In these hard economic times its implausible to see how someone can make it self-sufficiently without a job. It may take a long time to find a suitable job. So if you have to find a night/evening job at a restaurant or fast-food establishment to bring in some money and that will allow you to still look for a more fulfilling job in the daytime.
