Dress Shirts at Work

Dress Shirts

What Is Appropriate for Men and Women in a Professional Setting?

Your shirt will most likely be the first piece of clothing anyone sees if you are not wearing a blazer or suit jacket. Most people think that it is relatively simple to choose a dress shirt when it really isn’t. There are several factors that must be taken into consideration when choosing an appropriate dress shirt for work. You must make sure not to offend anyone while at the same time looking professional and feeling comfortable.

Men and Women

Size

You must make sure that your dress shirts are the appropriate size for a work setting. They do not need to be too large or too small. Overly large shirts will make you look shoddy and unkempt. It may seem like you’re wearing a family members clothing and you don’t need to look like you are participating in dress-up games.  The other extreme would be overly small or tight shirts. You may like to wear tight shirts on the weekends and your personal time, but, they are not acceptable at work. Work is the place to be professional. Snug shirts will look to constricting too others and may even make them feel uncomfortable. It will also make you look as if you need to lose some weight in the upper body area if you are a few pounds overweight.

Color

You should pick a decent color shirt for work based on the season. Women may be able to get away with bold or accent colored dress shirts in the spring or summer time. Men should wear white shirts, but there is nothing wrong with some pastels during the spring. Bold colors will not look great in dress shirts for work for men. It just does not look professional enough for a work setting.

Cleavage

Now this is particularly for women. No cleavage or minimal cleavage. You are in a professional setting. You should get ahead by your wits and knowledge and not your cleavage. I would suggest covering up with button-down dress shirts at work. Work is not the place to show your bodily assets. So dress as if you were the CEO and not a college student at a Friday night party.

In all you should look at what dress shirts are appropriate for work by observing people in the jobs you are aiming for. You can guarantee that they most likely have the dress code down to a science. You can even ask them questions if they are not too busy with their work.
